LEAZAR HALL

College of Design, NC State University

Leazar Hall is a renovation of a 62,000 sf historic building (circa 1912) located in the oldest campus precinct of North Carolina State University. The building, originally built in two phases as the campus dining hall, was changed in the 1970s and 1980s into a maze of offices and classrooms by a series of renovations to house nine different campus departments and services. This new renovation transforms the building and makes it a part of the College of Design complex that is located across a campus street. The project restores the three-level (plus mezzanine) building into a single use building with studios, seminar/review rooms, materials lab, and faculty offices. A new stair and elevator tower was incorporated into the design, which provides both egress and accessibility to a previously disjointed plan.

PENLAND l

Brevard, North Carolina

Phase I of this new studio building at the Penland School of Crafts houses a letterpress studio and and printmaking facilities. Environmental sustainability played an important role in this project. Solar orientation, storm water management, daylighting, and management of energy consumption all combine to make the carbon footprint of the building as small as possible. Although LEED certification was not pursued, every effort to follow the guildelines set forth by the US Green Building Council was taken.

 JUICE IT UP

Cary, NC

This 1600 sf project is the first of several for a client located in Chapel Hill, NC and in Los Angeles, CA. The project is located in a strip shopping center and is typical of many of the other locations that have been and will be built. The scope of our work was to provide components – counter, merchandizing units, menu boards, lighting, finishes, colors, etc. – that provide a store identity and that can be replicated and modified for other locations.

spruill annex renovation

Raleigh, NC

This project involved the renovation, addition, and conversion of an abandoned 100 year-old hospital wing for criminal mental patients into new government offices. The new building addition encompasses a new entry, lobby, reception/waiting area, elevator and stair core. It is sited on the inside corner between the abandoned building wing and a hospital wing still in use. The limited budget required new systems for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, windows, new stairs and elevator, and all finishes for the reconfigured space. Corridors were opened at the ends to provide natural light and views, and simple projecting accent walls of color signal circulation changes.

The lobby and reception area introduce natural materials such as a stone floor and benches, desk surfaces made of cherry wood, coupled with brick walls and cherry paneling. This warm palette of materials immediately greets the visitors and sets the foundation for a de-institutionalized setting all through the renovation. Interior glass is introduced throughout to remove the feel of hospital corridors and to allow daylight to reach internal spaces.

The new entry canopy, suspended from the stair tower, addresses the need for defining a new public entrance from the street. The principle exterior materials include brick, aluminum, stainless steel, glass and glass-block. The interior environment is defined by highlights of color and glass, cherry doors, slate floors and carpet.

CANNON ARCHITECT OFFICES

Raleigh, NC

The office is located at the end of an existing block-long warehouse in two garage bays that were previously used to wash large delivery trucks. The high bay studio opens to views of downtown Raleigh through glass that fills-in the previous large garage doors. Internally two green lantern boxes that define a central communal work area for plotters, printers, storage, drawing layout, etc, divide the space. Two solid blue boxes house the service zone in one and the conference room in the other. A mezzanine is located on top of these solid boxes. With the existing interior perimeter painted white the colored objects are placed inside to define spaces and their uses.

An addition redefines the aesthetic of the building and provides a new lobby / exhibit hall, weight and exercise rooms, locker rooms, meeting rooms, and athletic department offices. The project was completed in January 2013.
